The County Meath constituency of Bellinter, on the River Boyne, is located close to Navan. In the middle of the 19th century it was the seat of Mr John Preston who organised a race meeting on Tuesday 26th March 1844. The 2 mile course over good hunting ground was in the neighbourhood of Bellinter and consisted of 12 obstructions. Mr Preston’s favourite horse, Morning Star, won the 25 sovereigns Sweepstake, while the feature Sweepstake went to Mr Sheil’s Gipsy Queen. Two later, less valuable Sweepstakes were won by Morning Star and Mr Wrixon’s Arthur.
